Antique RH John Steamer Trunk
This antique flat-top steamer trunk features a wooden body reinforced with dark metal strapping, corner caps, and sturdy exterior wood slats. Opening the trunk reveals a removable interior tray with dividers, decorative paper border trim, and an original maker's diamond label from the RH John Galveston Trunk Factory.
Background Note
The RH John company operated a trunk factory in Galveston, Texas, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to supply travelers passing through the Gulf Coast port city. Flat-top trunks were engineered specifically for steamship and railroad travel so that luggage could be stacked efficiently in cargo holds. Compartmented interior trays allowed travelers to organize smaller garments and personal accessories above heavier goods stored in the trunk basin.
