Antique Pine Blanket Chest with Drawer

Background Note

Blanket chests, also known as hope chests or dower chests, have a long history as essential household items for storing linens, clothing, and other valuables. Historically, such chests were often made from readily available woods like pine and were common in rural homes across Europe and America from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Their simple, sturdy construction was prized for both functionality and durability, often passed down through generations. The addition of a bottom drawer, as seen here, became a popular design variation, providing more organized storage.
