Carved Wood Gilded Angel Wings, Pair

Background Note

Carved wooden wings originated as detachable components for traditional European and Latin American ecclesiastical santos figures, allowing delicate carvings to be gilded separately and transported without damage. Artisans historically prepared carved wood with gesso and colored clay bole before burnishing micro-thin layers of gold leaf over the raised feather contours. In decorative arts, the motif became a classic fixture of architectural salvage interiors, valued for its quiet symbolism and warm, reflective patina.
