Blue Crab Trio Acrylic Painting
This original acrylic painting on gallery-wrapped canvas depicts three swimming blue crabs rendered in deep olive, cerulean, and touches of red. Soft blue water washes and fine speckles surround the figures across an off-white background. The composition is signed by the artist, C. Ott, in the lower right corner, with the painted design extending over the edges to allow display without an external frame.
Background Note
The Atlantic blue crab, celebrated for its vivid sapphire claws and olive-green carapace, has long served as an iconic subject in American coastal folk art and regional maritime painting. Scientifically designated as Callinectes sapidus, or 'savory beautiful swimmer,' the crustacean thrives in shallow brackish estuaries and tidal marshes spanning the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Regional artists frequently highlight the species' distinctive paddle-shaped swimming legs and sharp lateral spines as recognizable symbols of estuarine life.
