Antique Marble Top Tiled Washstand
This antique walnut washstand features a removable dark patterned marble top surmounted by a high decorative pediment back fitted with molded green glazed floral tiles and twin display shelves. The lower cabinet offers two paneled doors with faceted glass knobs opening to open interior storage, complemented by a side-mounted metal towel bar and turned legs set on casters.
Background Note
Washstands with marble tops and glazed tile splashbacks became popular in late Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms to accommodate pitchers and basins before domestic indoor plumbing was commonplace. The hard marble surface resisted standing water and heat, while impervious majolica-type ceramic tiles protected plaster walls from splashes and introduced decorative color into utilitarian bedroom suites.
