Vintage Cedar Chest with Brass Straps
This vintage blanket chest is crafted from solid aromatic cedar, displaying distinct grain patterns and organic knotting across the case and lid. Two decorative brass strap bands secured with domed nailheads accent the exterior, complemented by integrated wooden side handles and a centered brass front lock mechanism. The hinged lid opens on dedicated support hardware to reveal a generous unfinished cedar storage interior, while the lower base features molded bracket feet mounted on casters.
Background Note
Aromatic eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) became the standard wood for American bridal hope chests due to its natural concentration of cedrol oils, an organic compound that acts as a natural deterrent against clothes moths and fabric-damaging pests. Popularized throughout the early to mid-20th century, these trunks were commonly gifted to preserve dowry linens, woolens, and heirloom textiles. The exterior use of brass banding and heavy nailhead trim paid stylistic homage to classic maritime and carriage trunks.
