Painted White Five-Drawer Chest
This tall vertical chest of drawers features a painted white finish accented with traditional brass-tone hardware. The top drawer is detailed with twin carved shell rosettes and framed by fluted side pilasters, while the four lower drawers present a stepped-front profile with ornate bail handles and faux escutcheon plates. A carved scalloped apron and shaped bracket feet complete the base.
Background Note
Carved fan and scallop shell motifs became prominent decorative elements in 18th-century American furniture design, most famously showcased in Queen Anne and Chippendale case pieces from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Skilled cabinetmakers carved these relief patterns into drawer fronts and pediments as a demonstration of artisan craftsmanship. This regional aesthetic remained widely celebrated through the 20th century as American makers incorporated block-front silhouettes and shell carvings into traditional revival bedroom furniture.
